Gaetani Monster Theory
Here are some potential grand theories on Gaetani monsters. Calvus is currently operating under a few assumptions from a couple of these theories. The question is where does this lead him in useful knowledge. It seems from play that monsters are transmografiable is the "crunchy" aspect he is getting out of these studies. Which is good news for Minkho. Idea #1: is most of the monsters are manifestations of peoples fear. So Mentem could help ward against it. Proof being that through the use of objects you can see through, examine and deal with what peoples minds say is there because it taps into primordial fear. Its the Impirical evidence approach. This could also be spun out to including why many of the monsters are at base form human in some way or another. The fear of others transforms people into Hungry Women/babies, Goblins, their spirits into Shadows, etc... Idea #2: Theocracy did it. Theocracy planned for magic but it built in the object fail safe device so that way Stewards of the region could find and defeat the monsters using their Theocratic items, while neighboring Stewards would rely on their magic which would be rather ineffective. This could be spun out to include the human experimentation and the pig herders if you want to get all sci-fi-y are sort of a "monster making" device that still roam the hills. Idea #3: Gaetani gods are "real" in whatever sense of the word you want to mean that, which we know is true to some extent and the monsters really are just the offspring of the Monkey and Wolf, Monkey and Dragon and whoever else those evil deities went around screwing. The mythology equals reality theory. Which I imagine means getting rid of the gods influences in the area also kills off monsters of that area. Though first it makes them really upset. Idea #4: The monsters have bled in over the centuries from the barbarian/monster/uninhabited lands of Orsinia, the mountains of the north west, from the islands or from the Ulvegi lands. This doesn't seem as likely though perhaps would explain regional monsters. |

A possible fifth I'm inclined to think it's a combination of influences, with #1 playing a major part. |

The All Knowing Oracle... Something Calvus would know because he's purchased copies or is borrowing copies of texts about Gaetani mythology. |

Mythologically true Sure, I like that idea of the actuality that Calvus discovers (or the reflection fo the actuality that Calvus invents) aligning in some sense with the mythology, but beyond that, I have no strong feeling of which way is right. Personally, I kinda like all 5 theories proposed. |

Ambiguously phrased. Sadly, Holy Churchers are boringly sexist that way: Love is female and Reason is male. |

I think individual Monkeys vi Whereas the monkey-brand monsters are the Monkey's progeny through non-human means, or they're the result of the Monkey tampering directly with a pre-existing being. Just theorizing here... |
