Iam's Conquests

Within one year of Iam's invasion of Tyr, he had conquered all of the lands once under the jurisdiction of the Priest Kings of Vestra and Pandrell. Perhaps in a spirit of irony, he named his new realm "Tympania," after the religious figure Tympanor, General of the God Emperor, whom the Tympanian people claimed first encountered Love and Reason within Cholaeic Lands.

For reasons never entirely clear to historians, Iam seems to have had no interest in ruling the lands outside of the jurisdictions of Vestra and Pandrell. While he subjugated both the Chalycidican Peninsula and the Ulderlinden, establishing garrisons throughout their territories and demanding obedience and tribute from their communities, he did not claim them as Tympanian territories, preferring instead to maintain their local leaders as his puppet rulers. Iam was only to annex the Ulderlinden very late in his reign, and then in direct response to the threat the region posed to Tympania. He showed no interest at all in Astia or the Westmarch, and he was never to set foot in the swamps of Orsa.

The only exception to this general rule was the Quintillican Confederacy, an alliance of Tyrulean city states led by Iam's erstwhile ally, Varus. Varus had been promised the citadel of Pandrell in exchange for his aid in the conquest of Tympania, but when it became clear that Iam had no intention of relinquishing Pandrell, Varus began mobilizing his forces against Tympania. The two theocrats went to war in 63; in 66, Iam defeated Varus and added the power base of Quintillica to his domain. After the fall of Quintillica, Iam's Tympania extended as far north as the distant city states of the Istravites.
