Javert

filius Pollex, of Houses Savacion and Derleth
apprenticed 370; mage 385; died 422

A member of Bethelion’s first graduating class and that rarest of all creatures, a highly conservative Derlethian, Javert was rejected by all of the traditionalist covenants he expressed an interest in joining upon his ascension to magehood: in 385, only the Plenilunial covenants and Annalum had yet come to accept the University. After being rejected out of hand as a candidate for membership by the Inceptum, Ultorum, Isrillion and Ad Vim Per Veritatem, as well as by the Aegidian Covenants Lapidis and St. Kevin, he resigned himself to life as a hermit, and for a time as a young man had quite a number of unkind things to say about the University system, which he felt had effectively destroyed his Cholaeic career.

In 387, however, after two of the University’s apprentices had been killed by the rogue Siccoculus, Javert returned to Bethelion to lead its students on the rogue hunt, an event which did much both to change the the Order’s mind about the virtues of University training and to reconcile Javert himself with the rest of House Derleth. After the rogue hunt came to an end, he was instrumental in the founding of Leo Compulsus, where he was to remain for the rest of his life.

For many years Javert served the House with honor, acting as the spokesman for conservative interests within Leo Compulsus. Over time, however, he became deeply involved with the reactionary Last Hope Conspiracy, and eventually turned to diabolism in an attempt to discredit the Plenilunial Elementalists within the House and remove them from power.

He was held on formal trial for his diabolic activities at Leo Compulsus late in 421, found guilty, and sentenced to death. His request to face his accusers in open combat, however, was granted, and he was killed by Aestus Fornax of Covenant Whitestone at the very beginning of the next year. Many believe that he lost the duel on purpose, in order to avoid the disgrace of public execution.

Javert’s only filius, Faber Ferrarius, had been killed at Mille Lacus several years previous, but he also left behind an apprentice of five years’ training, who was absolved of any and all complicity in Javert’s diabolic activities and adopted by Phrancor filius Porphyrus, of Leo Compulsus.
