In 161 the third King of Tympania, Cyril II, was assassinated by a Picardian partisan, leaving behind no obvious heir. A successor was chosen by the Council, but the question of succession, once raised, could not so easily be put to rest, and as dissatisfaction with the endless Quintillican War rose throughout Tympania, waves of popular discontent spread through the kingdom. The Ulderlinden, which had been annexed by Tympania in 151, rose up in revolt, as did the conquered Astian and Picantaean tribes. When the King of Tympania was once more assassinated, in 166, both Laeriolus, the Prince Chaeronia, and Mentius, Guardian of Tyr, claimed the throne, and Tympania fell into civil war.
