The end of the first quarter.

Well, first third, really. But I didn’t want to call it the half-time report. But damn the band is taking a long, long time to clear the field. Up With People just goes on forever, don’t it.

Anyway, Barry’s made one move; Emily six; and Charles and I both five. So that’s 17, 12, and 13 (and 13) books respectively to be written.

A total of 90 books were available at the start—18 shelves with room for five books each. If we end with a full set of 4 players and 18 shelves, we’ll have written up 72 books. If we stick with the roster as it currently seems to exist, we’ll end up with 55 written. So there’s plenty of room left for newbies and dilettantes—right now, there’s 73 books left to write. Here’s how they break down:

  • 17 prelisted, with title or brief description;
  • 16 phantoms created in play but not yet written;
  • 40 utterly blank books.

The prelists left are as follows:

  • The Blue Book of Lem;
  • The Yellow Book of Lem;
  • The Red Book of Westmarch;
  • The Unread Book of Westmarch;
  • The Red Book of Lem;
  • The Green Book of Lem;
  • Foucault’s Compendium of Spirits;
  • a Lemmish text regarding ignem;
  • a Lemmish text regarding muto;
  • a Lemmish text regarding herbam;
  • an argosy of spells, monographs, and trivia;
  • regarding certain aspects of the element of ignem;
  • a grimoire of spells, monographs, and trivia;
  • regarding certain aspects of the art of animal;
  • regarding certain aspects of the element of terram;
  • a miscellany of spells, monographs, and trivia;
  • regarding the essential nature of rego.

The phantoms left are as follows:

  • Circli et nimbi;
  • an untitled book-length treatise on the theory of pneuma;
  • De sedico (or Sedicum Macri);
  • Lucerna et tintinnabulum;
  • Tintinnabulum cavum Marium Ducis;
  • Ab esse ad posse;
  • First Year (or Annus Unus);
  • The Blank Book (with commentary);
  • Laying the Foundations (or Laying the Groundwork);
  • Notes on Triggers;
  • A Stone’s Throw;
  • Spectral Flight;
  • A Simple Cup of Melos;
  • Techniques of Farseeing;
  • Light of Shadows;
  • Halls of Learning;

Beyond that, all I have to say is I’m totally bagging Spectral Flight for my next move, to be published—when were we posting them?—next Monday, let’s say. —In other words, I’ll finally deliver on that punchline.

Or is that trenchers? Awesome, Kip. That's fantastic. I'm calling dibs on Laying the Foundations. Rollin. Yum, yum.

Stupid Tersa.

Wow, didn't expect you to take her out. Wonder what becomes of my good old nemesis.

And, better late than never, I hope.

Tersa’s still kicking.
I was just referring to the fact that I&38217;d already written about her book which is on the same shelf as Spectral Flight and we&38217;re only supposed to do one book per shelf each.

As for Milos, well, he’s still kicking, too, so not “taken out” so much. Just—resting. In an undisclosed (for now) location.

literally I suppose?
I meant taken out of the picture here, not the more colorful use of that term, I suppose. Good, I'm glad Tersa isn't swimming with the fishes somewhere.

And, Laying the Foundations has now been written. Doesn't show up as new since it had already been created. Sorry for the shortness of the entry. But I'm glad to at least have something down.

Did somebody fix it so that LtF shows up? Is that what "edit as new" does? I thank you.

Well, better late than never
I finally settled on a book. I should have it written in a day or two.

Totally unreferenced, Conversations with Old Women, compiled by Circumsessor of Manu Tenere, with contributions by several of the mages of Manu Tenere and the students thereof. I'm not sure whether my reviewer is more interested in the frontice piece, or the actual text, we'll see.

Authored on.
I tweaked the “authored on” field to date it as the most recent. “Edit as new” creates a copy of the current node and lets you save it as a new node. You just have to adjust the path and title.

I'm doing another brand newish book for next week. And I'll make up for not making any new phantoms by doing an extra new one or so.

I threw something up for Lucerna et Tintinnabulum. I think I know what you were angling for, Kip, so I of course totally ignored it.

I also probably did everything the wrong way, so feel free to fix whatever I've goofed.

I'm late this week. I'll get there.

By the way--was the picture of books just too much for the library node? Or did I nix that & just forget?

I think, since I don’t really have any idea which picture of books where, so I don’t think I ever saw it.

following folly
That was a great one to work with. And it made for our first complete shelf! Woot!

I have a question about the one I want to do next. Is it conceivable that the Prince would have given the covenant an elaborately be-jeweled text with a religious bent? If so, would it makes sense for it to be First Year, or should I create a different one?

(yes, I'm tipping my hand, but I'd rather know than have to back up.)

Some of the phantoms had gotten piled about in the library, which are now re-shelved.

Thank you, Charles. Do you have any more to say about what the precis of the book means? Is it religious interpretations of writings from the books of lem?

Chains.
I suppose Jenn has the final say, since Gi is the librarian, but I don’t think we have to chain our books to the shelves. Though it might not hurt...

Book of Lem
Which books of Lem still haven't been written about and from what perspective is this Lexicon game? In other words who are the PoV characters?

#29

Yay! he said, prematurely.
The library can be seen here. Every quick fact known about the books is entered in the table, and by noting the shelf location and searching for it (5c, for the third book on the fifth shelf, say), you can find all the other entries that reference that particular book for further details. Examining the shelves, you can see that the Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Red Book of Westmarch have not yet been written, and that the Orange Book isn’t even placed on the shelves yet, though there’s plenty of empty slots left to fit it in. (Sonata almost certainly brought a copy. Right?) —In addition, there’s the Blank Book With Commentary, Annus Unus (which Emily’s claimed), Lost in the Woods (a Lemmish text on muto), Circli et nimbi (Lemmish theory for non-Lemmites), a Lemmish text on ignem, and a Lemmish text on herbam.

The POV characters are clerks at other libraries, usually, noting down facts about individual manuscripts in their collections which happen to match books in the Nemus Animæ library, and providing some greater context here and there. So I’m writing as Antrum’s Censor, Charles is a Purpurean scholar, and Emily’s at Annalum’s central library. We don’t have anyone at Bethelion (which it’s been established has multiple specialty libraries), Lapidis (which would have a big if square library), nor do we have anyone representing whatever passes for the central Lemmish covenant(s) these days, which doubtless try to maintain definitive libraries of their own. Not to throw suggestions at you or anything. (Yay!)

Actually, I am playing (or would be if I were writing anything) a Circulan, not a Purpurean.

I think I've been hoping Charles would have some time to get to the books of Lem. If you were inspired to write some Matt, that would be great. I find them intimidating.

Lem the Lexicon
I find them intimidating too!

I think the best way to do the books of Lem satisfyingly would be to do them as a second lexicon game (after we finish Nimus Animae), doing excerpts from the books of Lem. The excerpts I've done so far were a lot of fun, but trying to do an entry for an entire book seems daunting.

Which in no way is intended to discourage Matt from doing one!

any suggestions?
I've been debating who at Annalum is my scholar. It's not Caleth or Yva. Perhaps Victoria? (That would explain her rabid anti-diabolism etc. Or C122 or C128?

#37
Kip Manley

Posted on November 23, 2005 12:45 PM

Or a Procopian.
And so not listed at all. I was assuming my first Censor was a Procopian, replaced by a junior mage when they went all, y’know, enthusiastic.

#38
Kip Manley

Posted on November 24, 2005 9:56 AM

The current score.
Assuming 4 full players and 18 books each, we were to write up 72 books out of 90 slots; we’ve written up 32. So almost but not quite.

That’s me and Emily with 12, Charles with 5, Dylan with 2, and Barry with 1.
