The Quintillican War

The city of Chylorissa was to serve as the focal point of the rising hostility between Tympania and the Quintillican Confederacy. Uncomfortably situated on the border between Cholaeic and Tyrulean spheres of influence, Chylorissa was an independent city-state, neither a member of the Quintillican Confederacy nor a part of Tympania, but possessing among its ruling families parties sympathetic to both sides. Throughout the 140s and 150s, both Tympanians and Quintillicans worked to ensure that rulership of the city fall to parties sympathetic to their interests; the result was an almost constant state of civil unrest within Chylorissa, as coup followed coup in rapid succession.

The series of hostilities known as the Quintillican War began in 155, when Tympania, finding itself unable to prevent the rise to power of a Chylorissan family allied with the Confederacy, sent troops to occupy the city. To liberate the city from Tympanian occupation, the Tyrulean-allied nation of Picardia invaded Chaeronia, and war was begun. Exacerbated both by a growing religious movement among the Tympanian people, who believed a crusade to destroy Quintillica to be their nation's divine mission, and by the Tympanian factions within Chylorissa, who feared that any settlement would involve their city being handed over to the Quintillican Confederacy, the hostilities were to continue, on and off, for the next decade, right up until the Fall of Tympania.
