Aftermath and Recovery (272-279) 0 comments
This is a summary of Aftermath and Recovery, fifth chapter of A Brief History of the Order. The original is in 10 parts.
- The Eleanorean Purge swept away the last remnants of centralization within the Order. By 273, none of the founders are left alive, and many of the Houses will remain leaderless for the rest of their history. In 275, the original Council of the Order of Cholae is finally disbanded.
- In the wake of the purge, the Houses begin to reassert their influence. Houses Aegidius, Manere, and Savacion all undergo significant reconstruction in this period.
- The eldest member of the Melian branch of House Aegidius gains recognition as the "First Melian Speaker," entitled to speak on behalf of the female members of the House. The Melians found their own covenant, Covenant Verbi Meliae, and begin to develop a culture and identity all their own, separate and distinct from that of the male mainstream of House Aegidius.
- The Primus Manere Thopas, alarmed by the hostility and vendetta which persist in his House even in the aftermath of the Eleanorean Purge, calls the First Manere Conjugation and imposes new regulatory measures on duelling within the House.
- House Savacion also begins holding regular House-wide meetings to discuss issues of concern to the House as a whole.
- The possessor of Lem's last work, the Indigo Book, becomes a hermit and establishes himself as the Guardian of the Indigo Book, a non-sectarian arbiter of Lemmite mastery who permits access to the book only to those he deems sufficiently advanced in understanding of Lemmite theory. The Guardian is to remain the closest thing to a central leader that the House will ever have.
- The library, Annalum, is refounded with the aid of the non-magical students of the Younger Procopius. House Cristofer considers these students members in spite of their non-Gifted status, and the "Procopians," as they are called, begin to swell the ranks of House Cristofer.
- The refounding of Annalum in 279 marks the beginning of the Order's recovery from the Eleanorean Purge.
