Or the way I see it at any rate, most points are open to discussion.
There were actually two events:
1 - The interference of Sol Media Nox
2 - The opening and misalignment of the axis mundi focused on the pool.
Though he doesn't recall, Gi did hear about the approach of the Judges. Gi was wondering what the land's connection to the Judges was like and so was investigating with the assistance of the bit of Here that he released into the land. Which had him tap into a leyline that involves the energy of Sol Media Nox as it continues to exist in present day.
Gi is fairly open on the high holy days mostly due to fasting and meditation and other ritual. Pros: he hits a high in ability, understanding and capacity for learning, especially on the Day of Knowledge and the Day of Ascension. Lots of energy, unusual sensitivity and powerful. Cons: he's very open and vulnerable to influence, especially given his usual lack of parma; he'll even refrain from his usual practice of casting it at night during these times. A pity, as that's what usually keeps his nightmares under control.
Ergo, it was very easy for the Sol Media Nox crew to tap in and basically ride Gi. From him they learned of the threat to the covenant and decided that these magi whelps needed help. So they co-opted Gi, moved him through the portal that then brought him to the buried and shielded remains of Sol Media Nox. They then set him to digging and wrapping what he found, ripping up his own over tunic for the wrapping. Sidenote: Gi wasn't actually circling the axis, it was the portal (and hence access to Gi ) via the essence of Sol Media Nox that Nil and Perdix were detecting.
Gi was under the influence of Sol Media Nox while he gave out the bundles and will have no idea why who got what. He can't perceive the spirits of Sol Media Nox, and will have no knowledge of what happened to him in their thrall. True, he apparently was communicating with them quite closely in his trance, but the Here might've been helping with that. Regardless, the only impression or memory he has of the entire experience is that he has the breastplate because he'll need it.
Now, when Perdix followed the orbit of Sol Media Nox and ended up at its anchor point, the secret pool, their rotation interfered with the axis mundi's own--to be fair, Perdix's rotation was caused by the axis's own inherent rotation. The pool was created as a focal point for the axis, or created by it. Sol Media Nox's orbit is tied to the axis and vice versa, so Sol Media's activity made the axis more accessible than usual.
The axis has developed or attracted a rudimentary sentience over time, and that's what makes note of the pacts and presences around the pool, co-opting the people who become involved with it as it needs. It realized that the axis was put out of whack and so employed the most recent people to tie themselves to it--Cameron, Nishoba and Ndapé--to put things right. And the first thing it did was to rebind them to it and pay them in advance for the service they were about to render.
As indicated, this axis in composed and influenced by everything and everybody it comes in contact with (this aspect is derived from the 'birthday party,' from the impressions that folks picked up on). The most recent influence is Love and Reason and the significance of six points. Hence it's need of six anchors in its ritual and the subsequent inclusion of Sonata, Ishta and Calvus.
It was the pool/tower/whatever that was giving people insights and suggestions, hence those who asked about Gi were informed when he was likely to appear. It was being helped and so reciprocated by being helpful--really it's main concern is to keep things in balance.
